FEDIAF’s updated safety guide endorsed by EU

The safety of pet food is of paramount importance to FEDIAF, the European pet food industry federation. A new version of its safety guide has now been endorsed by the European Commission, and will guide companies on the production of pet food with professional food safety systems.

Brussels, 15 May 2018 – Pets are increasingly regarded as family members by their owners and as such owners want a long and healthy life for their beloved companions. In order to prevent food-borne incidents that could threaten the health of pets, a FEDIAF working group updates its “Guide to Good Practice for the Manufacturing of Safe Pet Foods” on an ongoing basis. This guide recommends professional food safety systems – from raw materials supply, factory design, personnel and processes to safe packaging.

The document is a first-rate reference guide

“The newest version of our safety guide now covers monitoring pathogens and mycotoxins, as requested by the European Commission in 2014”, says John Williams, Chairman of FEDIAF’s Feed Safety & Hygiene Working Group.  “Furthermore, we had a request for more detailed content on traceability and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).” The Working Group agreed that individual companies should analyse their own hazards and set up a monitoring plan based on their risk analyses.

Third endorsement by the EU

“We are very proud that the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) and the EU Member States endorsed our new safety guide with its references published in the EU Official Journal in April 2018”, says Williams. “The industry’s excellent food safety record is proof that the document is a first-rate reference guide.”

FEDIAF’s Guide was first validated by the EU in 2001, a revised version was again endorsed in 2007. This third recognition highlights the continued emphasis the pet food industry places on safety and its commitment to setting best-in-class standards ensuring pets live happy, healthy lives.
