FEDIAF unveils new Factsheets on healthy weight for cats and dogs

FEDIAF is pleased to announce the release of two new factsheets focused on an essential aspect of pet wellbeing: maintaining a healthy weight in dogs and cats. These factsheets provide clear, science-based recommendations to help pet owners and professionals assess and manage the body condition of companion animals, with the goal of promoting long-term health and wellbeing.

The content has been developed by the FEDIAF Nutrition Working Group (WG) and reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), ensuring alignment with current scientific standards and veterinary best practice. Each factsheet outlines the significance of healthy weight management and offers practical tools, including:

  • Guidance on using body condition score (BCS) systems to assess pet weight
  • An overview of the health risks associated with underweight and overweight conditions
  • Recommendations for portion control, feeding strategies, and appropriate nutrition
  • Advice on encouraging regular, species-appropriate physical activity

These resources serve as a valuable tool for veterinarians, pet food professionals, and pet owners alike, supporting informed decisions that contribute to healthier, more active lives for dogs and cats.

FEDIAF remains committed to supporting animal health and welfare through scientifically sound nutritional guidance and stakeholder collaboration. Professionals are encouraged to share these resources within their networks to promote awareness and implementation of healthy weight practices in the pet-owning community.
